Think of yourself as a cup. Each day, you wake up full. But as you go about your day—getting tasks done and interacting with people—the amount in your cup gradually gets lower. And as such, you get less and less effective at whatever it is you’re supposed to be doing. You’re running out of steam. The solution is obvious: if you don’t have anything left to pour out, then you need to find a way to fill yourself up again. In work terms, that means you should take a break—an essential form of revitalizing your motivation and focus. Taking a break may get a bad rap in hustle culture, but it’s an essential, science-based way to ensure you have the capacity to live your life the way you want to live it. As I’ve logged more hours in my career, I’ve realized the average, eight-hour workday with an hour lunch break simply isn’t realistic—especially if your goal is to put your best foot forward at work. That’s why popular productivity techniques like the Pomodoro advocate for the “sprint” principle. Basically, you work for a short burst, then stop for a short, five-minute break. While the Pomodoro technique is a step forward, more recent research shows a shorter burst of working followed by a longer pause from work might actually be a more effective way to get the most out of stepping away from your desk. It’s more about the premise—when you know you have a “finish line” approaching, you can stay focused on the task or project at hand. There are many applications and tools that can help you block distracting websites and apps (such as social media) for specific periods of the day. Similarly, you can also use some mailing apps like Mailbrew to receive all the social media content or newsletters you don't want to miss in your inbox at a time you decide. So, no matter how long you work, take a break when you sense you’re losing steam or getting bored with the task. Generally, a 10-15 minute break should reinvigorate you for whatever’s coming next.

2. Get a Change of Scenery—Ideally, Outdoors

When it comes to increasing a person’s overall mental health, there’s no better balm than nature. 3. Move Your Body

A change of scenery can do wonders for your attention span and ability to focus, but it’s even more beneficial if you pair it with physical movement to pump up that adrenaline of yours. Simply put, your body wasn’t designed to be seated the entire day. 4. Connect With Another Person

Social connection is one of the most important factors for resilience. When we’re in a relationship with other people, it’s easier to cope with stress—and in my experience, getting social can also help to improve focus after a work break. One of my favorite ways to break after a 30-or-so minute sprint is to hang out with my family. And once a week, I carve out time to Skype my relatives back in Turkey. It’s amazing how a bit of levity and emotional connection can rev me up for the next work sprint. Now that most of us are working from home, getting some face-to-face time with a loved one isn’t as hard as it once was. So, take the time to chat with your partner. Take your kids outside to run around the backyard. If you live alone, call a friend or relative. Either way, coming up for air to chat with someone who knows and cares about you will leave you feeling invigorated and inspired.

5. Use Your Imagination

When you’re working with your head down, your brain has an ongoing agenda: get things done, and do it well. That can be an effective method for productivity, but it only lasts so long—especially because checking things off your to-do list isn’t the only ingredient to success at work. You also need innovation. That’s why I prioritize a “brain break” every day. When I feel my “cup” getting empty, I usually choose another creative activity to exercise my brain, like a Crossword puzzle, Sudoku, or an unrelated, creative project in my house. And when I’m really struggling to focus, I don’t do anything at all. Instead, I let my brain roam free for a bit, following my thoughts down whatever trail they lead me. As it turns out, there’s a scientific benefit to daydreaming. I love my sleep. I always make sure to get at least eight hours each night. I'll even leave parties early so I can get to bed at my usual time Yet, there are still mornings when I wake up feeling exhausted, even after a great night's sleep. Whenever that happens, I run through a mental checklist, grasping at straws to explain to myself why I feel so groggy: why do I feel exhausted? Did I drink too much last night? Did I stay up past my usual bedtime? Did I hit snooze on my alarm twelve times? Eight hours of sleep a night shouldn't result in chronic exhaustion, right? Regardless of how much quality sleep you're getting, you can still feel mentally exhausted, burnt out, run-down, worn through—whatever you want to call it. Most of the time, you're so exhausted you don't even have the time or the sense to see it clearly. The answer is right in front of your face, but you haven't had a chance to step back and analyze your situation. Maybe you hate your job, or you're worried about paying rent, but you're not actively thinking about it. How could you with all that's going on? It's planted in your subconscious, lurking there and eating away at your morale. That worn-down feeling is a cumulative combination of unconsidered stressful circumstances—an amalgamation of past worries and future anxieties. We aren't talking about your regular physical exhaustion from a long day's work standing on your feet. This is purely in between your ears. You're overstimulated, and it's dragging you down. But what's the real reason behind this brain fog? Why do you feel exhausted? The first place to look at is stress, which is the body's natural response to a new challenge or demand. Where are you currently experiencing stress in your life? Most pain, exhaustion, or emotional fatigue is the direct result of stress. Daily life is filled with tiny stressors—running to catch the morning bus, praying you'll find a parking spot, or worrying about the leak in your ceiling at home. As these small stressors pile on uncontrollably, you realize you're white-knuckling through the day. Mental exhaustion, simply put, is long-term stress. It's having a day like the above over and over again for months on end until it weighs so much it finally drags you to the ground. You can't keep living like this. You may have experienced this in the form of a "mid-life crisis," or even a quarter-life crisis where you stop and realize you never pursued the things you once hoped and dreamed of. Life passed you by in the blink of an eye. What happened to the "purpose" you once wanted to get out of life? Maybe you wanted to be an artist and all of a sudden, you look down and you're forty-three years old sitting in a conference room surrounded by suits and boring charts. You're faking your way through life and you're tired of putting on an act.

Why Do You Feel Exhausted?

There are many reasons why you may be feeling exhausted. There may be times when you had complete hours of sleep yet ask yourself after waking up: why do I still feel exhausted? Why? It's because there are other possible reasons for this exhaustion other than improper or lack of sleep. Here are some reasons why you feel exhausted.

1. High-Pressure Occupation (emergency responders and teachers)

Working in a highly stressful scene like an ER or police department is an obvious input for stress. Long hours on the job and making high-level decisions in crisis mode need to be followed by a period of rest, relaxation, and debriefing.

2. Working Long Hours

Consistently clocking in 12-14 hour days for weeks on end can drag you down. Many occupations require this type of work seasonally, like accountants during tax season. But when you're spending that much time at week year-round and there is no end in sight, mental exhaustion can become chronic.

3. Financial Stress

For obvious reasons, being in troubled circumstances with your finances can cause long-term stress and constant worries, which lead to feeling exhausted. How can you enjoy life if you can't afford to do the things you enjoy? No matter how much you sleep, you will still feel exhausted if something is troubling you at the back of your mind like financial problems.

4. Dissatisfied With Your Job

When you ask yourself, "why do I feel exhausted?" Try also asking, "Am I satisfied with my job?" Many people slog through life in a job they hate. Whether it's your unruly boss, the team that you work with, or the customers who you're sick of hearing complaining, being stuck in a dissatisfying job can cause feelings of resentment in work and your personal life.

5. Clutter

Whether you're naturally a messy person or life has become so frantic that you haven't even had a chance to clean or organize, clutter plays a massive part in mental exhaustion. Having a clear workspace and a calm environment to walk into makes a difference in mental clarity. This can also affect your productivity and your attitude towards your job.

6. Avoidance and Procrastination

When you feel exhausted, it may be because something at the back of your head is troubling you. You may have some responsibilities that you should be doing or have done but still have not. Putting things off too long will cause hidden stress to climb on top of you like a monkey on your back. Avoiding your responsibilities and procrastinating are some of the possible causes as to why you feel exhausted.

7. Living With Chronic Pain or an Illness

Going through life with stress is hard enough. Add on top of that something like chronic back pain or a congenital condition and it's like taking care of two separate people for yourself. This can also cause feelings of resentment, bitterness, and irritation around people you love, even those who support and take care of you.

8. Death of a Loved One

Losing a close friend or family member is something everyone has experienced, and it never gets easier. Many people try to play tough and portray to their loved ones that they are okay and dealing with it just fine. But the reality is that it's weighing them down. Be honest with yourself about it, and have someone you can talk to. Experiencing your grief alone and not sharing it with anyone may be the reason why you feel exhausted.

9. Lack of Purpose

Life needs to have a purpose. Every individual has a purpose that is entirely unique to their circumstance. It can be guided by religion, occupation, or an ultimate life goal to strive towards, such as writing a book or owning a business. Without an ultimate purpose, it's easy to let yourself slip into a depression that leads to mental exhaustion.

What Should You Do When You Feel Exhausted?

1. Talk About It

It may sound obvious, but talking through these struggles with someone is a form of therapy in itself. Chances are, someone has been through the same type of thing that you're going through right now. Don't hide it. Open up and learn how others dealt with it. It's more common than you think.

2. Find an Outlet or a Hobby

One way to help find joy out of a life of exhaustion is to come home to a hobby. Unwind from the workday by doing something you love that's also a bit challenging. Learn how to play guitar, play video games with your kids, read a book, or learn new recipes to cook for your family. Take your mind away from whatever it is you're worried about. Focus entirely on the process and get out of your anxiety.

3. Be Realistic

You can't do everything. Look at your schedule, and be honest with yourself and the people around you about what's possible for one person to do in a day. You can't change the world alone. Enlist the help of others and don't be too proud to ask. Putting the weight of the world on your shoulders may be the reason why you feel exhausted.

4. Arrive Early

It took me years in life to realize how much being early can relieve stress. Waking up five minutes earlier gives me five minutes to relax and think if I'm forgetting anything before I head out the door. Leaving five minutes before I normally would for an event gives me five minutes to arrive and get a good seat, scope out the scene, or talk to someone and learn something about the place. Being early allows you to be relaxed and completely comfortable as opposed to running through life in a hurry. Settle in before anyone else and have the mental edge that you're prepared for anything.

5. Exercise More, Try Healthier Habits

Exercise is probably the last thing you want to do. But have you ever regretted a workout? One hundred percent of the time it makes you feel better and gives you the momentum to have a great day. Try healthier habits. Go for a walk right when you get out of bed. Try a new vegetable once a week. Drink more water. Stand more. Replace dessert with fruit. If you drink ten cups of coffee a day, try to go one day a month without coffee. Healthier habits ultimately lead to a happier life in more ways than you think.

6. Journal

Similar to talking about your problems, journaling is an excellent outlet for not only getting the thoughts out of your head but also to clarify your feelings. As you write, you'll realize you actually didn't understand what you were thinking. Writing helps that. Do it often.

7. Take Care of Something

Get a pet. If you're not ready for a dog, then buy a few plants to take care of. This takes the attention off yourself and on to something that relies on you for livelihood. It will help put everything in perspective and relieve stress and exhaustion.

8. Meditate

This is such an overly-used cure-all, but meditation really does help with clarity of thinking and developing a sense of calm in your life. It doesn't have to be sitting with your legs cross, fingers in a circle, and saying "Oooommmmmm." Meditating can take on whatever form you're comfortable with. It can be taking a few deep breaths before you step out of your car, or it can be closing your eyes and thinking of your loved ones when you're having a hard time. Sometimes before bed, I'll just close my eyes and envision a future I want for myself. I picture the people I love hugging me and saying "Congratulations." For what? I don't know, but I'm putting myself in the mindset to succeed.

1. Acknowledgment and Validation Must Come First

Many of us have not been taught to live life by our own design. Having the freedom to even entertain choice is a grand luxury for a lot of us. Someone may have once said to you that you’re living in a dream world—that to get through life you need to stop chasing fantasies. You need to maintain a level head, get your feet back on the ground, and ‘get real’. Now, it's time to get real with what you’re feeling and experiencing. One of the hardest things to face is that you feel this void. However, honestly acknowledging that this feeling exists within you can bring you catharsis. Recognition of the discomfort and validating its existence can be incredibly liberating and empowering in itself. Through self-acknowledgment, you start to soften resistance you might have held if you were in denial. What you now need to be ready for is leaning into the other layers of discomfort you might be experiencing. On a deeper subconscious level, your emotional intelligence is telling you something’s amiss, missing, or in misalignment. Being part of a community where we feel embraced and loved on some level is essential for all of us. We need to feel bonds—a sense of genuine connection and mutual respect with those who you believe matter most. Whenever you think about your relationships and friendships, which of these features are present? Outside of personal relationships, many of us seek recognition in some form in our work, careers, or individual projects. Being seen and heard often comes through how we serve others in our vocations. Purposefulness and having a role that matters in our communities validates our existence and gives us feedback that we are important and have value. Ask yourself how you define what types of bonds are important to you.
  • How do you know the bonds you seek are there?
  • Are they strong enough?
  • Are they deep enough?
  • What are your measures of knowing this?
  • Are you experiencing enough of this to feel contented—that you are ‘ok’?
If not, you might need to consider ways to invest in increasing the quality of connectedness. Also, recognize that it is as much about you receiving investment from others into your relationships as it is you making deposits into them. When you look through a magnifying glass at each of your relationships, you’re qualifying and quantifying your emotional portfolio. Look at your working relationships. Look at your family and friends. Look at your intimate relationships. If you identify there’s been a void, you now have potential opportunities to start turning things around to fill that void.

4. Take on Challenges That Allow You to Feel a Sense of Achievement

One main reason you might have this feeling of the void is that you have an absence of opportunities that allow you to experience a sense of accomplishment and personal growth. Having grand goals with complex mind maps of action steps is not the missing ingredient here. However, it’s highly likely you derive greater emotional and mental satisfaction from exerting some level of effort to achieve some sort of change or result. A degree of challenge in the journey allows you to experience more personal satisfaction when you overcome it. Your confidence will grow as your skills expand. You start recognizing you have the capacity to achieve different things—more things if you choose to. A complete absence of challenge can leave us feeling lost and empty. If you feel bored and stagnant, it’s time to look for inspiration to fill that void. Schedule and dedicate time to explore and experiment. Reconnect with your childhood playfulness to test and try new things or experiences you might have always wanted to do but never made the space or time for because you had to be an "adult." As you might start creating a list of next adventures and pursuits, take two approaches:
  1. Allow yourself money, time, and space to experiment and explore.
  2. Allow yourself money, time, and space to identify and start something where you can experience gradual progress and personal growth.
Ensure that your list energizes you and brings you a sense of fulfillment that is independent of anyone else’s approval, participation, resources, or decision-making. Let it be yours to own and control alone. Let it validate and allow you to feel good about yourself. Also, be wary of putting pressure on yourself to follow through with a new pursuit until the end. Have you ever started and not finished something because you lost interest? Accept that. Recognize that the dwindling inspiration to follow through could be a sign what you’ve selected turns out to be an ill fit. However, be mindful of being flippant and make sure to commit to giving due effort to something before deciding to opt-out or continue.

5. Build Enough Certainty and Security in High-Priority Areas of Your Life

Life can feel empty, even though you may find yourself chasing your tail daily. In a world where we are constantly ushered to move faster, produce more, and do so with fewer resources, feeling a sense of certainty and stability have become highly prized commodities. Proverbially spinning all the plates in harmony becomes harder and harder. Emotionally and mentally, we feel less and less secure—we feel less safe. Self-disappointment can creep in as goals that hold more fun and pleasure always seem to get pushed to the wayside. Stephen Covey’s Circle of Control (aka Circle of Influence) can greatly help us recognize how to direct our thinking and efforts in ways that best serve us. Imagine a target with three concentric rings. The outermost ring represents things that we feel concerned about because they influence us. However, we basically hold no control over them. The middle circle represents the things we influence. This might be our work circumstances and how we contribute to relationships. We still don’t have full control as others are privy to also influence outcomes, decisions, and actions that are taken. The center circle—the circle of focus—is the place where you have the most power to be effective. Only you can control your thoughts, your decisions, your behavior, and your actions. When you feel lost and confused, go back to working on your center of focus. When you do, expect to be liberated but also feel the weight of accountability you didn’t realize you have. You’ll discover what thinking patterns, decisions, and actions you took got you to where you are now. As you start identifying and exercising better ways of thinking, you can consciously make decisions and different action steps that you feel much better about.

6. Contribution and Service to Others

It’s time to change your perspective and shift and lift your mindset. Research has shown that certain parts of our brain’s reward centers are more activated when we give support and serve others compared to when we receive support.((PubMed.gov: The Neurobiology of Giving Versus Receiving Support: The Role of Stress-Related and Social Reward-Related Neural Activity)) Engaging even in just small scale, short-term activities that temporarily take your focus away from your problems gives your brain a rest from feeling the weight of confusion and frustration you’ve been drowning in. Choose something that allows you to exercise your natural gifts and abilities. It might be helping a neighbor or relative out to do domestic projects in their home. It might be helping to organize or coordinate an event to ease the toll you can see it’s taking on someone you care about. In doing so, you are reconnecting with your sense of purposefulness and value by doing something meaningful for others. As you operate in this newly awakened mindset, check to see if the void you’ve been feeling and experiencing looks different through this new lens. More selfless acts of service help to widen your perspective. The weight of emptiness and confusion you might have felt may start to feel less heavy. With some of the mental and emotional toll lifted, you’ll be in a better mental state to explore ways to claw out of the swamp of stagnation.

7. Practice Daily Gratitude and Review Your Life

For gratitude practice to be effective in helping you fill the void, it needs to be relative to your situation and involve identifying things that are important to you. Yes, you can be thankful for having a roof over your head, having food to eat, nice clothes to wear, and relationships with people who love and respect you. However, such recognition can often guide you to complacency and feeling guilt for feeling ungrateful even amidst our quality living conditions. Exercise retrospect to contemplate:
  • What obstacles have I managed to overcome to get me here?
  • What skills and attributes do I possess that enabled me to overcome those obstacles?
  • What unique traits and characteristics allow me to have developed the connections I have with people I love and respect?
  • What accomplishments do I have a license to be proud of? (These include work-related feats, recognizing personal skills and talents, overcoming challenging situations, and personal growth in relationships.)
Don’t simply exercise gratitude for tokens and trophies of achievements. Expand your recognition of your efforts and experiences that these symbols represent. Review the current state of play in each of the main areas of your life -- which we call the Wheel of Life (i.e. work/career, finances, intimate relationships, friendships, personal growth, health and fitness, spirituality), and check your level of gratitude for where things currently sit. Then, ask yourself for each area: where do you want to go next? You might find inspiration and reminders of goals you set but had lost sight of or forgotten. Confusion can quickly transform into better clarity. Before you know it, you’ve got plans and a new-found excitement to get started.

8. Be Wary of Seeking Quick Fixes to Fill the Void

Many of us feel that we operate best in productivity mode. We are making something, creating something, achieving something, and changing something. We’ve been conditioned to think that there is something wrong with us if we are not. Constantly trundling and moving on to the next thing at lightning speed without much thought is often what leads us to where we are. As you make changes, be wary that should you start doing things that primarily replenish your emotional and mental tanks first. You might be met with disapproval, judgment, and opinions (potentially unwelcome) from others. Changes that better serve you may upset the normal rhythm others are used to experiencing with you. Manage your expectations of yourself and exercise gradual consideration where you see changes are required. Give yourself and those around you time to adjust. Friendships and relationships may change. Some may disappear altogether, while others become strengthened. Just as the accumulation of time and experiences has led you to feel a void in your life, so will the accumulation of time and new experiences be required to fill it. However, this time, you’ll be doing so by your own design, not by default.

You may be wondering how you can clear your mind. After all, we all want a clear mind when facing our daily lives, right? The bad news? You can't technically (or completely) clear your mind. On average, a person has over 6,000 thoughts per day!((BigThink: New study suggests we have 6,200 thoughts every day)) I think we can all agree that clearing through that mental inbox is probably futile. We are all busy people. We have work to do and families to take care of. Not to mention, we also have to take care of ourselves. While clearing all of your thoughts may not be the plausible way to go, we can agree that turning a blind eye does more harm than good. The good news? Clearing your mind and returning to the present moment comes from a simple act of acknowledging that you're overwhelmed in the first place. We'll get to that in a second. But first, what happens when you're not present?

What Happens When You're Not Present?

What happens when you are not present? Most likely, nothing incredibly damaging and only short-term. After all, no one is present 100% of the time. We've evolved to keep looking and working towards a future goal. The very nature of our careers is to make sure that we're setting ourselves up for the future. Our relationships are very much the same way. Think of a time when you've asked the question (or have been asked): where do you see this relationship going? Our thoughts and, therefore, our habits and actions consistently point in the forward-moving direction. This has ensured our survival and human evolution. The point at which this becomes harmful is when we become too stuck in this forward motion. The result of this is "burnout."((VeryWellMind: Burnout Symptoms and Treatment)) It's a term that is most often used in the workplace, but burnout can happen in any area of our life where you feel like you're pushing too hard and too fast. The idea here is that you're so engrossed in the forward movement, that you take on too much and rest too little. There is no pause in the present because you have this sense that you must keep working. On a physical plane, the body takes a real hit with burnout. You feel more muscle fatigue, poor concentration, insomnia, anxiety, poor metabolism, and so much more. These symptoms are the body's way of throwing you red flags and warn you that you must slow down. But because your mind is so preoccupied with this forward momentum, it disconnects you from listening to your body's signals. The only time you really hear them is when the signals are too loud to ignore, such as during serious illness or pain. As we can see, not being present is something that snowballs over time. Eventually, it can cause serious mental, emotional, and physical ailments. So, how do you deal with this?

How Do We Come Back to the Present?

Answering this question will answer the question of how to clear your mind because they go hand in hand. There are many tools you can use to begin a mindfulness practice. To reiterate, mindfulness is simply defined as the act or practice of being fully present.((Mindful: What is Mindfulness?)) Tools that allow you to step into this practice include meditation, journaling, a body-centered movement practice such as Qigong, or simple breathing exercises. Underneath it all, however, is one technique that acts as a universal connector, and that is acknowledgment. This term may not sound like a technique, but its power truly flourishes when put into practice. For us to come back to the present moment, we have to acknowledge that we have trailed off into the past or the future. Likewise, for us to clear our mind, we have to acknowledge that our mind is overwhelmed, distracted, or scattered. This simple act of pausing and catching ourselves in the moment is how we can build our acknowledgment practice. So, the next time you find yourself overwhelmed at work with mental to-do lists, pause. Acknowledge your state of mind, and say to yourself (or out loud) that you're overwhelmed. This sends a signal to your whole being that you're aware of what's going on. It cuts the cords of illusion, denial, and ignorance. You are now building your awareness of yourself, which is an incredibly potent gift.

Clearing Your Mind Is a Practice

Now that you've acknowledged where you are and how you feel, you can take action. You can take a few moments away from your desk or to-do list, and practice something to ground yourself back into the present moment. This may be as simple as taking a walk and admiring the changing of the leaves. This practice is also known as "forest bathing," and it doesn't necessarily need to take place in a forest. It can be in your favorite park or even walking around your town or neighborhood. Bring your attention to the senses as you enjoy your walk. Can you tune in to the sounds of your footsteps on the Earth? Can you notice the smells and take in the sights around you while staying present in the moment? Can you touch a leaf or the bark of a tree, and allow the feel of texture to teach you something new? Such a practice does wonders in clearing your mind and bringing you back to the now! It also connects you more deeply to your environment. On the other hand, a mind-clearing practice may look like sitting down and going through a nourishing meditation or breath practice. It can also be translated as "box breathing." The idea is to make the length of your inhales and exhales the same. This allows you to take in more oxygen and slow down the chatter of the monkey mind. It also kicks on the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for resting and digesting. This will allow your heart rate to slow down so that you can reduce any anxiety you may be feeling. It also aids in digestion, as the metabolism is back on track and helping you physically process food and drink properly.

Add Meditation to Your Breathing

Adding meditation to your breathing is also helpful. In fact, following your breath is a meditation in itself. Adding a visual, like imagining gentle ripples on a lake or clouds passing along a beautiful blue sky, can give the mind something to attach to without running through the train of your thoughts. On the other hand, if you are mentally overwhelmed and meditation sounds like more stress, tuning in to a guided meditation session can be alleviating. It often helps to hear the voice of a teacher or guide who can walk you into more peace and contentment with their words and energy. If you can't find such a guide in a local studio, turn to the many meditation apps on your phone or Youtube.

Write Your Thoughts

Alternatively, another powerful practice is sitting down and writing out all of the thoughts in your head. We call this a "Brain Dump." It is an effective method for simply releasing your thoughts so that you can mentally breathe and process things better. Grab a piece of paper and write out all of the thoughts that are pressing for your attention. The idea is not to analyze the thoughts or fix them. Rather, it's to give those thoughts an exit, so that you can move on with your day without fixating on them aggressively. This can look like a laundry list of thoughts, or a diary entry. There is no wrong way to do it! Afterward, feel free to close your journal or rip up the paper. You don't need to hold on to what you wrote, but it does help to see the expression of what you're holding on to mentally. Likewise, this practice is very potent to do at night before bedtime. So many of us struggle to sleep soundly with many thoughts bouncing back and forth. This exercise before bed can allow us to enter a deeper level of rest. Regardless of what you do, understand that practicing mindfulness is a lifelong process. With life's ups and downs, it's stressful to attach yourself to the practice of being mindful and in the present moment. Why? Because it's never guaranteed that you will be present for 100% of your life. That's a simple human fact, and it's healthy to give ourselves a break (and often!). In this practice, what matters more than anything is intention. Our intention of staying present and sticking to our mindfulness practice is what will encourage us to keep coming back to it, even when we forget.
