In an age where beauty and youth are highlighted, what is it that actually brings us happiness? It may shock you to learn that the key to being happier may be found in our age. Wait. Did you just read that correctly? Can your level of happiness actually increase the older you become?
What Scientists Find
Scientists are beginning to prove that the things we chase in youth like money and acceptance, don’t bring us the happiness that comes with experience and the act of living. If one’s skin is sagging and wrinkles are forming everywhere, you may ask: where is the joy in all that flabby skin?
The answer is positivity. I’ve seen this in my own life. While the issues and stressors are different in middle age, I can also compare them to other events I’ve experienced. The result? Almost always, what I am dealing with is nothing compared to my past.
This not only allows me to be more positive about current situations, but it is beneficial when considering future life issues. Positivity is more than simply slapping a smile on one’s face. It is the conscious ability to look at what is going on in your life and weighing against what might have been instead.
Instead of looking in the mirror and bemoaning what you see, choose to accept all the life you have lived. See those experiences as stepping stones instead of hinderances. Not only will the positivity increase your happiness, it will allow others in your life to embrace their happiness as well.
